LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A local political group is revealing their plan to change how people vote in Lee County.

The group, called Lee Voter Freedom, wants to make all county commission races non-partisan.
Currently voters and candidates must be registered to a major political party in order to participate in primary elections for lee county commission.

“Most offices like school board, all cities, supervisor of elections; they're all nonpartisan so that everybody can vote,” said Lee Voter Freedom volunteer Dick Anderson.  “There isn't a particular partisan issue for the county commission any more than there is for a city council person, so there is no reason except in order to control who votes.”

The Lee Voter Freedom group wants to collect enough signatures to add a referendum to the 2018 ballot.
