CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Police say it was likely a medical emergency that caused a Cape Coral woman to drive into a canal, where bystanders jumped in to rescue her Monday afternoon.

67-year-old Dolores Zearfaus remains in critical condition at the hospital.

According to Cape Coral Police, around 1:40 PM, Zearfaus was driving her car east on Savona Parkway approaching the end of the road at Chiquita Parkway.  That's when she apparently slumped over the steering wheel and her car and hit an SUV at the intersection at slow speed and continued through the intersection.

Her car the traversed two vacant lots, crossed SW 15th Place, hit a water pipe in the front yard of a home, and crossed another empty lot before crashing into the canal.

Police say three witnesses jumped into the water to help the woman and members of the Cape Coral Fire Department helped pull her onto a dock where CPR was performed before rushing her to the hospital.

There were no injuries to the two teenage females in the SUV.
