MIAMI (AP) - Tropical Storm Gaston is strengthening as it moves over the far eastern Atlantic.

The storm's maximum sustained winds had increased Tuesday to near 65 mph (100 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center says additional strengthening is forecast and Gaston is expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday.

Gaston is centered about 685 miles (1105 kilometers) west of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands and is moving west-northwest near 21 mph (33 kph).

Elsewhere in the Atlantic, Fiona is breaking up as a tropical depression and should gradually weaken over the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 30 mph (45 kph). The National Hurricane Center has discontinued its advisories.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Kay is expected to become a remnant low later on Thursday.
