LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Authorities in Southwest Florida are counteracting inaccurate reports that Interstate 75 is clogged with evacuees.
Some social media posts being circulated claim extensive backups on I-75 in Southwest Florida as evacuees hit the roads ahead of Hurricane Irma.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday morning, the North Collier Fire Rescue District reports: "Contrary to reports, I75 is not backed up from evacuees. There is still time to leave; if you can, please do. As you drive, keep a check on your gas and fill up often."
According to the Fox 4 Traffic page, as of 11am Wednesday, there was a backup in the Punta Gorda area near Jones Loop Road, likely caused by the bottleneck from three lanes down to two. Further north, delays are being reported in Sarasota and Bradenton areas.
