Firefighters gained the upper hand against a wildfire burning in the Picayune Strand State Forest.
Officials announced Friday night the Flag Pond Fire is 70% contained. No homes in the area have been damaged. The fire has been burning near Miller Drive and 52nd Avenue.
"What allowed us to get the increase in containment is the winds came out of the northeast so it actually pushed the head of the fire to the southeast which is an area that already burned," said Florida Forestry Spokesperson Samantha Quinn.
Quinn says a larger brush fire from last year charred most of the vegetation making it difficult for this fire to gain any ground.
Officials will continue to monitor this fire as well as others burning throughout the county.
