NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Fire crews spent their Mother's Day extinguishing flames in a North Fort Myers neighborhood.
Flames spread in the area of Shelby Lane near Mellow Drive in North Fort Myers around 3, Sunday afternoon. North Fort Myers Fire District crews responded within minutes and put out the flame completely.
The blaze got extremely close to homes in the area. "I was pretty fearful, just because the wind was blowing in the direction of our houses," said Tony Paquette, who lives in front of the wooded area that burned. "Good response time saved mine, and my neighbors house.
According to the Florida Forest Service's Fire Danger Index, fire danger in the county was high, Sunday. There is a burn ban in place for Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties to reduce the risk of fire spreading.
It's unknown at this time how the fire started and how many acres were burned, but neighbors estimate about 10 acres were involved.
