The Florida Department of Health in Collier County said the smoke is an irritant that can cause a scratchy throat, coughing, headaches or irritated eyes and nose. It can also affect chronic heart or lung conditions like asthma.
They offer the following tips to stay safe:
- Avoid prolonged outdoor activity
- Pay attention to visibility and how you feel
- Run your air conditioner if you have one
- Close your windows
- Avoid using anything that burns when smoke is high, such as candles or wood fireplaces
- Do not vacuum - this stirs up settled dust
- Do not smoke
