FORT MYERS, Fla. — This week, several restaurants across Southwest Florida are battling it out for best plant-based burger in celebration of National Burger Day.

It's called the SWFL Virtual Burger Battle Benefit. Food Idea Group, Carbon Press, and Millennial Brewing Company are hosting the first annual event virtually with online voting for more than a dozen participating restaurants.

People are encouraged to sample competing plant-based burgers throughout the week to vote the winner announced on May 30.

The week-long battle ends with a takeout tailgate at Millennial Brewing on Saturday.

Several local restaurants and food trucks will be socially-distanced so that customers can safely enjoy local dishes with live music entertainment.

Millennial Brewing says the event is designed to raise awareness on current food supply chain issues due to COVID-19.

It also helps support local businesses and a local animal rescue.

The VIP tailgate parking tickets will go toward benefiting Humane Haven animal rescue in Southwest Florida.
