Weather alerts: Strong storms in Charlotte & Lee

12:16 PM -- An area of strong thunderstorms will affect Southwestern DeSoto, Sarasota, Central Charlotte, Northern Lee, and Southeastern Manatee counties.

At 1214 PM, strong thunderstorms were clustered near North Port, moving east at 30 mph.  Winds in excess of 40 mph are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include: Cape Coral, Fort Myers, North Port, Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, St. James City, Buckingham, Matlacha, East Dunbar, Pineland, Charlotte County Airport, Lochmoor Waterway Estates, Myakka River State Park, Matlacha Isles-Matlacha Shores, Pine Island Center, Palmona Park, McGregor, Burnt Store Marina, Lake Suzy, and Laurel.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.  Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

11:07 AM -- An area of strong thunderstorms will affect DeSoto, Sarasota, Northwestern Charlotte, Western Hardee,  and Manatee counties.

At 1107 AM, strong thunderstorms were clustered 7 miles south of Myakka River State Park, or 8 miles northwest of North Port, moving northeast at 30 mph.  Winds in excess of 40 mph are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include: North Port, Sarasota, Bradenton, Punta Gorda, Palmetto, Arcadia, Port Charlotte, Ridgewood Heights, Kensington Park, Saint Armands Key, Myakka City, Myakka River State Park, South Bradenton, West Samoset, Whitfield, Lakewood Ranch, Lake Sarasota, Sarasota-Bradenton Airport, Parrish, and Ona.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

10:02 AM -- A Significant Weather Advisory has been issued for DeSoto, Sarasota, Charlotte, Hardee, and Manatee counties until 11:00 am.

At 10:00 am, doppler radar was tracking an area of strong thunderstorms from over Saint Armands Key to near Myakka City, moving east at 30 mph.  Winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include:  North Port, Sarasota, Bradenton, Punta Gorda, Palmetto, Arcadia, Wauchula, Port Charlotte, Anna Maria, Ridgewood Heights, Babcock Ranch, Kensington Park, Saint Armands Key, West Bradenton, Memphis, Charlotte County Airport, Myakka City, Myakka River State Park, South Bradenton, and West Samoset.
