IMMOKALEE, Fla. -- A Collier County deputy is on paid leave after the sheriff's office says she shot and killed a man who lunged at her with a knife.

This is an update to a story we first brought you as breaking news Monday morning. The sheriff's office says the deputy was forced to open fire on 46-year-old  Juan Ruiz Sunday night when he went at her with a knife -- after he had already stabbed a man.

It happened outside the Azteca Supercenter on Main Street in Immokalee.

Deputies initially had responded to the area after a 911 call about a fight in which Ruiz stabbed 55-year-old Mario Umanzor.

This incident sparked a debate on whether there are enough bi-lingual dispatchers to serve the Spanish-speaking population in Collier County. The man who called 911 spoke very little English and struggled to tell the dispatcher where to send help.
