FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Minnesota Twins say sports journalist Rod Simons died in Fort Myers while covering the Twins spring training.

The team says the 56-year-old Simons spent the last two decades covering sports in various parts of the country.

He produced his own radio show focusing on the team and often times wrote for the team's website, and was a former lead anchor at KSTP in Minneapolis. He won nine Emmy awards and was honored with multiple Outstanding Sports Anchor Awards in the Minnesota region.

He is survived by his wife and daughter.

No word on how he died at this time.
