Business Emergency Operations Center opens

LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is now offering help to businesses affected by Lake Okeechobee water releases.

The virtual office will assist in assessing the impact the discharges and flooding have had on local businesses. Affected businesses can complete a Business Damage Assessment Survey.  The survey results will be shared with various state and local agencies to expedite implementation of appropriate disaster relief programs for affected businesses.

This comes days after Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for Lee and St. Lucie counties following the heavy rainfall that forced the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to start dumping billions of gallons of water into our estuaries.

Meanwhile, the governor is also calling on the Obama administration to fully fund the more than $800 million in needed repairs to the Hoover Dike, which holds Lake O's water.
