One dead in structure fire in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A structure fire that appears to have started in a garage damaged a condominium, leaving one person dead Thursday afternoon.

It happened shortly after 1pm at a home on Brandywine Circle South, in the Brandywine Condos in Cypress Lake.

Neighbors tell Fox 4 that a car in a garage caught fire, which spread to the structure.

Investigators have confirmed to Fox 4's Lisa Greenberg that there was a death inside the home.

The Association Manager of Brandywine said the man had been living there for nearly 30 years.

Neighbors describe him as sweet and quiet.

"Very nice gentle man, just very quiet. Kept to himself. His wife died a couple years ago," neighbor of five years Noreen Omansay said.

She said her mom called 911 after seeing the flames and smoke, and hearing what sounded like an explosion.

Noreen said she's noticed the man having car trouble, and seen AAA at the house a few times recently.

"My mom had said that earlier today the lights were on for quite a long time, red lights. It could've started then, or it had the motor on," she said.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation
