OCALA, Fla. (AP) - A red-shouldered hawk is recovering after being shot from its nest in a north Florida park.

Brittney Hunter tells the Ocala Star-Banner (http://bit.ly/201J4WS ) she called police after witnessing the shooting on Saturday evening. The hawk had two babies in its nest, which was about 60 feet up in the tree.

Hunter says the two men who shot the hawk left the park before police arrived.

Officers called Ocala Utility Services to send a boom truck to rescue the baby hawks. Then the hawk family was taken to the Animis Foundation in Ocala.

Foundation director Michelle Whitfield says the injured hawk will be taken to Westside Animal Clinic in Spring Hill for surgery.

She called the shooting "horrifying."
