JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A police officer in northeastern Florida was shot at least twice outside of a Waffle House.

The Jacksonville Beach Police Department tells WTLV-TV that Cpl. William Eierman was shot Wednesday night. The officer was taken to a hospital.

Police say Jovan Sisljagic was walking on Beach Boulevard when he fired shots at a patrol car driving by. The 27-year-old then ran away where he met two more officers. Sisljagic and Cpl. Eierman were shot during an exchange of gunfire.

Jacksonville Beach Mayor Charlie Latham says Cpl. Eierman is in good condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Latham visited the officer and his family in the hospital.

Sislajagic was released from the hospital Thursday morning and was immediately booked into the Duval County Jail on two counts of attempted murder.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will handle the investigation into the shooting.
