MIAMI (AP) - Police say a man armed with an AK-47 and a handgun fired 108 rounds at vehicles and officers on a busy Florida highway before abruptly surrendering.
Miami-Dade Police Detective Daniel Ferrin said Tuesday that 36-year-old Horvin Ruiz is facing charges including attempted murder, attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated assault. Ruiz remained jailed Tuesday and court records listed no attorney for him.
Authorities say Ruiz began shooting from inside his Toyota Corolla about 1 a.m. Monday as he was driving south on the Palmetto Expressway. Police say he continued firing the AK-47 after officers arrived until he ran out of ammunition, firing more rounds from a 9mm handgun. Officers returned fire and Ruiz then surrendered.
No one was seriously injured, but several vehicles were damaged.
