SANFORD, Fla. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a man in connection with the accidental shooting death of a 6-year-old girl.
Sanford police said in a news release that they arrested Erik Dominick Williams after the girl he was caring for found and handled an unsecured firearm Tuesday that accidently discharged.
Officials received a call from Central Florida Regional Hospital staff on Tuesday, who reported that a girl had been admitted with an apparent gunshot wound.
Following an investigation, officers determined that Williams had knowledge that the firearm was stored without any safety mechanisms under a sofa. Police say Williams knowingly allowed the girl to play in the area where the firearm was located.
Williams was booked on charges of child neglect with great bodily harm and unsafe storage of a firearm. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
