DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Officials say a Florida deputy shot and killed a man after he refused instructions to put down his gun.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office says in a press release that Deputy Miguel Kent fatally shot the man late Saturday night in Osteen.
The release says deputies approached what they thought was an abandoned vehicle along a road about 11 p.m., and saw a man in a driver's seat and a gun in the back seat.
Officials say deputies told the occupant not to reach for his gun, but he draped his shirt across the window to obstruct their view and moments later was seen holding the gun. The statement says Kent shot the man after he refused to put the gun down. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities had not released the dead man's identity.
