TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Legislature has two new leaders who are promising to enact sweeping changes over the next two years.
State legislators met Tuesday in a one-day session where they selected Rep. Richard Corcoran as House speaker and Sen. Joe Negron as the next Senate president.
Both Corcoran and Negron have an ambitious agenda they plan to carry out when legislators hold their 60-day regular session in March.
Negron wants to boost money to universities and do more to battle water pollution that's caused toxic algae blooms along the state's two coastlines.
Corcoran has pushed for new restrictions on lobbyists, including a ban on lobbyists using emails or text messages to reach out to legislators when they are about to vote. Corcoran is also promising to rein in new state spending.
