Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a measure to allow smokable medical marijuana to be used in Florida by qualified patients.
Last week, the state Legislature passed a bill repealing Florida's ban on medical marijuana.
Gov. DeSantis released this statement on Monday:
"Over 70 percent of Florida voters approved medical marijuana in 2016. I thank my colleagues in the Legislature for working with me to ensure the will of the voters is upheld. Now that we have honored our duty to find a legislative solution, I have honored my commitment and filed a joint motion to dismiss the state’s appeal and to vacate the lower court decision which had held the prior law to be unconstitutional."
Back in January, the Governor announced his mission to get Florida's ban on smokable medical marijuana repealed.
"I want people to have their suffering relieved," said Gov. DeSantis in January. "This law isn't up to snuff."
According to the new law, a patient can be prescribed smokable medical marijuana if a qualified physician submits a recommendation to the state Board of Medicine, showing why that patient needs the drug.
Patients will be given a 35-day supply of smokable medical marijuana, under the law.
