Associated Press--- The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will begin issuing a new, more secure Florida driver license and ID card.
The initiative started August 2017 and will end December 2017 in selected areas.
The new license and ID cards design will incorporate nearly double the fraud protection measures compared to the previous design, including redundant date, ultraviolet (UV) ink and optically variable features.
Photograph images will now be printed with a transparent background and appear in four locations on the credential. Designated header colors will denote the type of license the customer holds and drivers under 21 years of age license will display a red box on the front that will indicate the date the driver will be under 21.
In addition to anti-fraud features, the new design also features designations for a number of categories, inluding; sportman's, boater, freshwater and saltwater fishing, hunting licenses, veteran, organ donor, deaf/hard of hearing and developmentally disabled.
Individuals are only required to replace their current driver license or ID card if their current credential has reach its expiration or a required change is needed, such as a name or address change.
Previous license and ID cards will still be in use alongside the new credential until replaced or phased out.
However, all credentials issued beginning on January 1, 2018 will carry the new look and security features.
