9-year-old girl dies after ATV driven by 11-year-old friend overturns in central Florida

PLANT CITY, Fla. — A 9-year-old girl has died after an ATV driven by her 11-year-old friend overturned in Plant City.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of an accident in the 6000 block of Varn Road around 8 p.m. Saturday. According to deputies, the 11-year-old girl was driving the ATV with the 9-year-old girl in the passenger's seat.

At one point, the driver tried to turn the ATV but lost control, causing the ATV to flip. Neither girls were wearing their seat belts, deputies said.

The driver was able to climb out under the ATV. The passenger was ejected.

The 9-year-old passenger died at the hospital and the driver suffered minor injuries.

Authorities have not released the identities of the 11- and 9-year-old girls.
