Shoppers swarm SWFL malls for holiday deals

The Thanksgiving left overs had barely cooled down before many Southwest Floridians hit the malls and big box stores Thanksgiving Day night.

Handbags seemed to be the hot item of the night at Miromar Outlets, where dozens lined up at the Michael Kors store.

"The whole store is 50% off, yeah it's worth it." said Kelly Cox.

She drove to Miromar outlets from West Palm Beach.

"Because they have the best deals here.  We could have gone to Sawgrass in Ft. Lauderdale, but it's nicer in Estero."

Just a few years ago, shoppers had to get up at 3 or 4 in the morning to take advantage of Black Friday deals, but Black Friday has turned into Black Thursday at Miromar, which began opening on Thanksgiving night in 2007.

And many shoppers don't feel bad about getting a jump start on their holiday shopping.

"I've never had to miss a Thanksgiving to come shopping and I've worked plenty of jobs where I've had to work holidays, it really hasn't taken away from my family time," said Alexandra Esckilsen.

But not everyone can pull off a Thanksgiving Day feast and shopping trip on the same day.

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you, but we ate at I-Hop," said Cox.

Miromar will stay open 24 hours until 9:00 pm Friday.
