FORT MYERS, FLa. -- The Fort Myers Salvation Army prepared enough food for 700 people on Thanksgiving. The facility served food between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. "We feed a lot of different families. Theres a lot of preparation that goes into it. We start about a week and a half out," said lead chef Courtney Henderson.
An early start is needed to feed their dining room with families from near and far. "We moved down here and fell on hard times and it if it weren't for the Salvation Army, we wouldn't be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner," said Kara Deihl, whose family moved here from Missouri. Tough times made easier when the kids can enjoy cupcakes and the adults know who they can depend on for a meal. "If it weren't for the Salvation Army, we'd be SOL. A lot of people would be SOL because this place here, when everything else closes down, this place is open," said Dennis Simms.
Volunteers include those from all over Fort Myers, including Lee County Commissioners. "These people here may not have a family here today. We want to spend our day with them to make them feel welcome because that's what thanksgiving is all about," Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass said.
