Punta Gorda Police responded to a home near Olympia Avenue and Cooper Street in East Punta Gorda just before 5 o'clock this morning after reports of someone banging on a door asking for help.

Smith was taken into custody around 8:40 a.m. in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Burland Street. Police said he resisted arrest and was tasered before being taken into custody. He was carrying a semi-automatic handgun.

Smith was identified as the robbery suspect and the suspect who fired at them officers and deputies.

Smith will be facing multiple charges.

Punta Gorda Police Department Interim Chief Tom Lewis stated, "Capturing this suspect was the result of well-trained police officers and deputies working together. This is yet another example of the benefit of the strong relationship between the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office and our agency. A quick resolution with no injuries to officers or citizens in a dangerous situation such as this is an ideal outcome for our community."

Some areas of Trabue Woods will be closed for an undetermined amount of time to through traffic as crime scene technicians process several different scenes.
