CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Gopher tortoises are now on the list of protected species in the City of Cape Coral.
City council members approved the ordinance giving tortoises the same protections burrowing owls have in the city.
Gopher tortoises are already protected under state law, but this ordinance allows local law enforcement to enforce state protections.
