FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Police are investigating what they say was a drive-by shooting Monday morning that left a father of eight dead.

One of the victim's childhood friends and mother of one of his children was distraught on the crowded scene. "I don't even know how to tell Caleb this. I don't even know how to tell my son, your dad, as great as he was, all the gifts and talents and treasures he's given you, he's gone. I can't process that."

The victim was identified as 34-year-old Victor Johnson. It happened at 10:20 AM near the intersection of Cranford Avenue and Blake Street.

Arriving officers found Johnson mortally wounded in a silver Nissan.  A black Dodge pickup truck was seen fleeing the scene and later found abandoned at Westchase Apartments on Metro Parkway.

Johnson has a previous criminal background, including a charge for homicide. Family told Fox 4 that he was a loving person, despite his rough past. "I just spoke with my cousin Vic three weeks ago," said his cousin. "He was like, you know, I just need to make a change in my life."

Many spectators on the scene said they are sick of the constant violence in Dunbar. The mother of one of Johnson's children said she just wants to someone to speak up. "Stop being spectators and become participators. I don't know who did it, but I'm sure someone out there does," she said. "My son's dad, thanks to you, is gone. If you love your family like I love mine, change your life."

If anyone has any information regarding this case they are requested to contact the Fort Myers Police Department at 321-7700. Callers may also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS or text message C-R-I-M-E-S (274637) Keyword FMPD.  Tipsters can remain anonymous.
