SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. -- One person is dead and one person was critically injured after a car crashed into an asphalt paver on Interstate-75 Sunday.

The crash happened at 1:43 PM about four miles west of the Sumter Boulevard exit near North Port.

Florida Highway Patrol says the car was traveling through a construction zone when the side of the car hit a barrel. The driver swerved and over corrected, and hit a second construction barrel as it crossed into the median.  That's where it crashed into the paving equipment.

The passenger, 22-year-old Devontae Mitchell of North Port, died at the scene. The driver, 20-year-old Tyria Balcom of Sarasota, is in critical condition at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

There were no construction workers in the area at the time of the crash.

Charges are pending further investigation.
