Officer shoots, injures armed suspect in Clewiston

CLEWISTON, Fla. -- A Clewiston Police officer shot a fleeing suspect that was pointing a gun at the officer Thursday night, according to police.

The incident took place at the First Bank on East Sugarland Highway around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

According to the Clewiston Police Department, 18-year-old Markevious Slaughter was fleeing Palm Beach County in a stolen vehicle.  After entering Clewiston, Slaughter lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the front of the bank.

Slaughter fled the vehicle with a semi-automatic gun and approached a Clewiston Police Officer while pointing his gun at the officer.

The officer opened fire on Slaughter and hit him with gunfire.

Slaughter was apprehended and trauma alerted to the hospital via helicopter.

FDLE was contacted to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
