Sugar shortage: No Coca-Cola in Venezuela

Amid a serious food and energy shortage in Venezuela, Coca-Cola is reportedly no longer in production inside the country.

“Sugar suppliers in Venezuela have informed us that they will temporarily cease operations due to a lack of raw materials,” Coca-Cola spokeswoman Kerry Tressler told Reuters.

The news comes in the midst of slumping sugarcane production due to price controls and rising production costs, as well as problems in obtaining fertilizer – issues that have pushed many smaller farmers to switch to other, non-price-controlled crops.

Thus, production of Coca-Cola and some other sugar-sweetened drinks has halted completely.

According to BBC News, the company will continue producing sugarless drinks such as Diet Coke.
