TAMPA — Monday afternoon Gov. Ron DeSantis held press conferences in Tampa and Miami to address the two confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Florida. The governor says two people have tested postitive for the virus. He ordered health officials to declare a public health emergency due to the global spread of a new strain. Health officials identified one of the two Florida patients as a woman in her twenties. The other patient is a man in his sixties.
"The first patient is an adult patient in Manatee County without travel history to China or other countries identified for restricted travel by the CDC. The second patient is an adult resident in Hillsborough County with a recent history of travel to the affected areas in Italy," said Gov. DeSantis.
State officials say they waited to tell the public about confirmed coronavirus cases in Florida for at least 24 hours after they learned of positive test results. Gov. DeSantis says the risks remained low, but to expect more cases across the state. The Health Department says 184 people in the state are being monitored for the disease.
