A Naples man was arrested Tuesday for performing illegal dentistry, after one of his patients wound up in the hospital due to a botched procedure. Juan Marco Flores-Orgaz, 53, has 4 charges against him, including practicing without a license resulting in bodily injury.
A red sign posted on the front door of Flores-Orgaz's home on Diana Avenue says "unsafe." According to an arrest report, police say that was especially true for a woman who went to Flores-Orgaz for dental work on the recommendation of her boyfriend's coworker.
Inside, the woman and her boyfriend told police there was a dentist chair, teeth molds and dental tools. They told investigators that Flores-Orgaz said that he needed to extract some of the woman's teeth.
When the alleged victim's boyfriend heard her cry out in pain, he went to check on her and saw Flores-Orgaz give his girlfriend several injections without wearing any gloves.
The couple told police that Flores-Orgaz got frustrated while trying to pull a stubborn tooth, and used a power tool which broke the tooth. The boyfriend, seeing that his girlfriend was in "tremendous pain," said that he had to tell Flores-Orgaz several times to stop the procedure.
The couple claimed that Flores-Orgaz told them not to go to the hospital for 5 days. or to the police. They said that they gave him $100 to make him think that everything was fine between them.
When the woman went to the hospital later that night, doctors told her that she had a serious infection.
Flores-Orgaz is from Bolivia. At his first court appearance on Wednesday, a prosecutor told Judge Jim McGarity that he believes Flores-Orgaz is a flight risk.
The judge set bond at $95,000. Flores-Orgaz is also ordered to have no contact with the victim.
