Major winter storm threatens SWFL travel

FORT MYERS, Fla. - As a powerful snow storm is expected to bury much of the Mid-Atlantic states and Northeast with more than a foot of snow this weekend, major airlines are preparing for the worst.

American Airlines, Southwest and Delta are among those already issuing travel waivers to customers ahead of the storm.

As of Thursday, there were already numerous delays throughout the day. However, hundreds more delays and cancellations are expected as Winter Storm Jonas delivers historic snowfall and blizzard conditions to much of the eastern part of the country.

Washington D.C, Baltimore and New York City are expected to deal with the most impacts from the storm.

"Very bitter. Bone-chilling cold, right to your bones. Not very pleasant,” said Justyn Stecker of the last four days he spent in the Big Apple. He's thankful he doesn't have to deal with Jonas' fury.

But not everyone was so lucky.

“As grandma and momma, you’re nervous when your babies are in the air with bad weather. You don’t know what’s going to happen so you pray for the best,” said Stephanie Hunt.

Hunt was waiting for her son Thursday after his flight was delayed due to bad weather in Texas.

Others tried to beat the travel headache by taking a flight before the weather gets severe.

“We were supposed to fly out Saturday morning but there’s supposed to be ice and snow and Charlotte doesn’t know how to deal with it so we thought we’d get ahead of it,” said Julie Kramer who flew to Charlotte Thursday.

A representative at RSW tells Fox 4 that the best way to stay ahead of delays and cancellations this weekend will be to check the Carrier's website often. That's where the most up to date information will be.
