Major East Coast airports try to resume service

Posted

(AP) - East Coast airports are gearing up to resume service after the big winter storm brought transportation to a standstill.

But it will take some time to recover from the cancellation of more than 11,000 flights during the four-day period from Friday to Monday.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says more than half of flights at John F. Kennedy International Airport have been canceled, along with about 85 percent of flights at LaGuardia Airport. Both airports got more than two feet of snow.

United Airlines said via Twitter that it plans to start "very limited operations" at Newark and other New York area airports this afternoon. The airline says it plans to gradually resume operations tomorrow at airports in the Washington area.

Officials at Philadelphia International Airport say they plan to "gradually" resume operations today.

According to the flight tracking service FlightAware, more than 3,300 flights scheduled for today and more than 600 for tomorrow have been canceled. Another 3,100 flights were grounded on Friday and 4,500 yesterday.
