LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Neighbors are on alert, Monday, after a string of burglaries in a gated Gateway neighborhood.

The incident happened over the weekend at the Timber Ridge community. Neighbors described the area as safe and family-oriented.

According to police reports, thieves broke into three cars and one home's garage. Amongst the items taken were a gun and a gate opener for the neighborhood. "It makes me really scared because being in this neighborhood, we moved in here because we thought it was safe. Now all the sudden, these break-ins are hard to digest," said one mother.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the one thing all targeted cars had in common, was that their doors were unlocked. LCSO said the following:

"We cannot stress enough, if you want to avoid becoming a victim, take the simple precaution of locking your vehicle and making sure you’re not leaving valuables in plain sight."
