Stolen car linked to string of car burglaries in Lee County

FORT MYERS, Fla., - Lee County Sheriff's deputies are investigating after several cars were burglarized and one car was stolen near the Cypress Lake Golf Course in Fort Myers.

"I always thought it was a very safe place," said Debra Wescott, a nearby resident who says her neighbor's car was stolen early Wednesday morning at Club at Crystal Lake.

"I was shocked. That's like going into your home. It's a violation and it makes me feel very uncomfortable," Wescott said.

The owner of the stolen car tells Fox 4 his black Acura TSX is the same vehicle that ended up in a ditch off of I-75 Wednesday afternoon.

Two men are now facing grand theft charges in connection with the crime. It's still unclear if the suspects are the ones who originally stole the car or broke into the other vehicles.

The owner says he's "not sure" if he locked his car the night before.

Others in the complex claim crooks got inside their cars too.

"Our daughter had come over and said they got into her's and she looked in the window and saw all our paperwork scattered all over," said Rita Miller, a resident of the same community.

The thieves got away with a $100 GPS.

"It's a shame. We've been here 12 years and never had a problem," Miller said.
