CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A Cape Coral veteran now has a safe place to call home. Thanks to the nonprofit "Building Homes for Heroes" teaming up with JP Morgan Chase, Staff Sergeant Adel Brito was gifted a mortgage free home on Thursday.
While Brito served he suffered serious injuries from explosions that damaged his spine and joints. The injuries left him with shin splints and knee instability.
"We are putting a veteran in a safe place to live, that he never has to worry about where he or his family is going to live or how he is going to provide," said Building Homes for Heroes operations manager Kim Valdyke.
Sergeant Brito said the first thing he plans to do after moving in is let his nieces go swimming in his new backyard pool.
"I was actually getting dog food for Sebastian in Walmart and I got the call and I sat down and started crying it was amazing I was so overwhelmed I didn't think this would happened," said Staff Sergeant Brito.
Building Homes for Heroes specializes in offering safe homes for veterans. The nonprofit said 6,000 veterans nationwide are still on the waiting list.
