The Lee County Sheriff's Office arrested two people after detectives determined they were engaging in prostitution at the Motel 6 in North Fort Myers.

Deputies said Matthew Laxton, 33, met Kimberly Brown, 26, at the motel to pay her to have sex with him. The couple met on BackPage.com, a website that advertises escort services.

The Motel 6 sits right behind Northern Palms Charter School.

"To find out something like that happened here in what I think is my neighborhood concerns me," Glenn Novack of North Fort Myers said.

"I've lived in this area my whole life. People actually know this, but nobody talks about it because it just happens," Trever Resheske said.

Not just prostitution: last year, 1000 feet down the road at the Travelodge, deputies said a man rented a room with the intention of selling a large amount of molly and marijuana out of it.

Novack proposes some changes. "They vet a little better. If you have a local address, you better have a real reason. A house fire, something like that. Something transpired in your life that you really need the hotel," Novack said.

Staff at the Motel 6 in North Fort Myers said guests need a valid ID or passport and $66 to pay for a room for the night.

"I wish the owners of the hotel understood, didn't put a dollar in front of their reputation and the reputation of North Fort Myers," Novack said.

Brown is facing additional charges because she was wanted in Charlotte County for robbery.
