CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- An 18-year-old was shot and injured Tuesday night while walking along Hancock Creek South Boulevard, police say.

It happened just before midnight Tuesday in the 1000 block of Hancock Creek.

According to Cape Coral Police, the victim, 18-year-old Sammie Young says he was walking southbound with a friend when a dark-colored sedan passed them northbound and someone in the car shot him in the hip.

Neighbors in the Pine Key complex heard the shots, and said a search of the area followed. "I just heard gunshots and I was scared, so I didn't really do anything, I just stayed in my house," said one neighbor. "I saw them searching the woods for a few hours, but I don't think they got anybody."

Cape Coral Police Lt. Dana Coston tells 4 In Your Corner people should be on the lookout, but assures Cape Coral is safe. "I don't think people need to be anymore concerned today than they were yesterday about the potential for drive-by shootings in Cape Coral," he said. "Cape Coral has a very low violent crime rate, and crimes that are genuinely random acts of violence are exceedingly rare."

Young was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

A person walking with Sammie at the time of the shooting could not provide a description of the shooter or the vehicle's tag.
