The Naples Police Department announced increase enforcement of traffic laws in areas where there are a lot of bicycles and vehicles.

Starting next week officers will target three areas: Tamiami Trail from Seagate Drive to Sandpiper Street, Goodlette Road from 13th Avenue to 3rd Avenue, and Gulfshore Boulevard south to 7th Avenue South.

"Motorists need to be aware of you, they need to know when bicyclists have the right of way," said Beth Brainard, Executive Director of the Naples Pathway Coalition.

According to police records, there were 22 bicycle related accidents in 2016 and 4 through March 21st, 2017, within city limits.

"One is too many if it's someone in your family. Who do you know that you want to be maimed on the road?" said Brainard.

Brainard says she's met with the Collier County Sheriff's Office about improving bicycle safety in the county, which she says lack enough bike lanes.
