Fort Myers Police arresting a man who is accused of kidnapping a child and sexually assaulting the child while in his custody.
Police say around 4:10 AM on Wednesday they got a call about a child who was kidnapped and taken in a car heading down Edison Avenue.
Family members identified the man as William Cole.
Police started searching the area and around 4:52 AM officers found the car around Cranford Street and Lafayette Street with the kid inside. Cole was gone but officers quickly found him hiding behind a home on St. Charles Street. He was taken into custody without incident.
During the investigation, police say they learned Cole had sexually assaulted the victim while in his custody.
Cole is facing charges of kidnapping/false imprisonment of child with sexual battery, one county of sexual assault/battery victim under 12 years of age, and one count of cruelty to a child without great bodily harm.
