FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. -- The Lani Kai hotel says the resort maintains a safe, family atmosphere, Tuesday, after shooting nearby caused a scramble on Memorial Day.
According to an incident report, two people were wounded during a shooting that happened around 6:40 P.M. Monday. Lee County Deputies said the victims are not cooperating with the investigation.
Deputies also say it was not a random act, but rather a confrontation between parties who already knew each other.
Some beach goers were not surprised to hear about the incident, telling Fox 4 police are called out to the area often. Fox 4 found at least five incident reports where deputies responded to the hotel, ranging from battery to robberies. "The fact that a shooting happened right across the Lani Kai of all places, it's not something you would see at Diamond Head Resort or Pink Shell," said Ricardo Rodriguez. "Lani Kai in general, they need to work on getting a better structure going."
However, management at the Lani Kai don't feel the resort is unsafe. Entertainment director Bob Tabarrini was there that night with his family. He stressed the shooting did not happen on the resorts property, but rather a sidewalk nearby. He said the resort does everything it can to make sure guests are safe. "It happened off property and I think the aftermath spilled over," he said.
Tabarinni tells Fox 4 25 security personnel were on duty when the incident took place. When asked if anything would change resulting from the incident, he said they were prepared. "The protocol we had in place, I don't know that we could have done anything to prepare for the situation differently than we had."
