Growing number of students bringing weapons to Lee County schools

CAPE CORAL, Fla., - Could students be carrying weapons in your child's school? A Fox 4 Investigation reveals more and more weapons are showing up in Lee County schools.

Two students were arrested for possession of a weapon on school property after a taser was deployed in a crowd of 600 students at Caloosa Middle School. It happened just before the first bell rang Tuesday morning.

"It makes me uncomfortable with my daughter and my neice going to this school that something could happen like that," said Jonathan Jones, a parent at Caloosa Middle.

The taser that was found had the word "police" stamped on both sides of it.

It's the latest in a growing list of arrests for carrying a weapon at schools across Lee County.

Less than two weeks ago, two butcher knives were found in one kid's bag at Lehigh Sr. High School. Then, a student at Ida Baker High School was arrested for bringing a BB gun to school.

"If a taser's coming in, that means a knife will be coming in, a gun will be coming in," Jones said.

This school year, Lee County deputies have arrested at least 14 students at various schools for bringing a weapon to school. That number is up from just 7 last year and 8 the year before.

It's a cause for concern for some parents who say they weren't notified.

"I think the parents should be notified. There should be some protocol for it that it even happened," said Ashli Munt, a parent at Caloosa Middle.
.
Others suggested a metal detector should be placed at the entrances to prevent students from bringing weapons inside the campus.

"They need to protect my child. that is my most prized possession in this world and I'm trusting the school to take care of my child," Jones said.
When Fox 4 reached out to the Lee County School District for a comment, a spokesperson said, "The safety and security of our staff and students is our highest priority."
