Fired Punta Gorda police officer will not get his job back

Posted

A fired Punta Gorda police officer charged in a deadly shooting at a Citizens Academy Class will not get his job back.

Today, the city rejected Lee Coel's appeal saying it had every reason to fire him. Coel was let go in earlier this year after being charged with first-degree manslaughter.

Coel is accused of shooting and killing Mary Knowlton with a gun that was supposed to be loaded with blanks not bullets.

Police Chief Tom Lewis will stand trail next month on a culpable negligence charge in this case.
