County lowers speed limit on congested Naples road

The Collier County Commission voted to decrease the speed limit along St. Andrews Boulevard.

The 2 mile long road in the Lely area is used by many as a short cut between Rattlesnake Hammock Road and Tamiami Trail.

By the middle of next month, the speed limit will be lowered from 30 to 25 miles per hour.  In July, a stop sign will be added at the intersection of Warren and St. Andrews.

Last month, the county added a 4 way stop at the intersection of Wildflower Way and St. Andrews.  Shortly afterward, Charles Stampfly was in an accident there.

"Gave me a big old crash in the back, and rear ended me," he said.  "I didn't know exactly what happened,  I have hearing aids, the hearing aids popped out of my ears."

The county will also place plastic barriers between St. Andrews and the bike lanes so people don't use them to pass.

"Band-Aids, which they've been doing for years, and it doesn't help," said Stampfly.

Stampfly and his neighbor Rita Pyrdoll say the county needs to cut off the flow of traffic by permanently blocking intersections into the neighborhood.

"I was working out in the yard and one after the other, and I said this is a Sunday, why are we having so much traffic on a Sunday?," said Pyrdoll.

Once the county reduces the speed limit and adds the stop signs, residents will ask for another traffic count, to see if it decreases the amount of cars in their neighborhood.
