6th annual Water Safety Day held at Cape Coral Yacht Club

CAPE CORAL, Fla-- The 6th annual Water Safety Day was held at the Cape Coral Yacht Club Saturday. The event saw more than 100 residents interested in learning more about water safety.

"Just because you know how to swim don't take it for granted," said Cape Coral Police spokeswoman Anella Nyack.

Drowning is known as a silent killer and affects both adults and children.

"They can slip, they can fall something can happen and in a heart beat they are gone before you know it," said Nyack.

Experts said one of the biggest misconceptions adults have is that you'll hear and see a drowning. But it's this belief that makes you more vulnerable around water.

"When there's a big group of people you just assume that somebody eyes are on them and if everybody's making that same assumption that's when you're going to have a tragedy," said Cape Coral Fire Department spokesperson Andrea Schuch.

Experts recommend the best way to prevent a drowning is to double check your security measures. You'll want to make sure your pool fence is installed correctly and never left unlocked, your door closest to the pool has an alarm on it and if you're in a group you always designate someone to watch whoever is swimming.

"Let's say you have visitors come down from up north they aren't used to being around the pools, maybe their kids don't know how to swim because they aren't around pools, so you want to be conscious of any visitors or guests your having to make sure they know the pool rules," said Schuch.

More than slipping in a pool, you may be surprised to learn what kind of drowning are most common in Cape Coral.

"We respond a lot around the cape is cars in canals so we want to talk about how to get out of a submerged vehicle," said Schuch.
