NAPLES, Fla. -- The Collier County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a young child after he was found floating in a pond behind a condo complex off Radio Road in Naples.

2-year-old Peter Mitchell was pronounced dead at NCH North Naples Hospital.

According to a sheriff's office report, the boy's mother reported him missing Tuesday evening when she couldn't find the boy in their Sherwood condominium.  A caller to 911 reported that a door was wide open in the home and they were concerned about the pond nearby.

Deputies arrived to help witnesses search the area.  That's when a neighbor spotted the boy floating face down in the water.

"They told us to stand back when they brought him out," said neighbor Mariana Sheldon. "He was lifeless. We were just hoping that the baby would come back to life."

"It's been a horrible, horrible day," she added.

CPR was performed and Mitchell was transported to the hospital, where he was later declared deceased.

"It was so sad," Sheldon said. "The whole neighborhood's just in shock."

The Major Crimes Unit was notified to begin an investigation.
