FORT MYERS, FLa. -- The number of cats and dogs being euthanized is going down by thousands year after year, and theres plenty of families who are adopting animals that are helping that statistic continue to go in the right direction.
Ria Brown of Lee County domestic animal services acknowledges the pet overpopulation problem seen around the country is no different than it is here in Lee County. "We estimate there are probably 120,000 feral free roaming cats here," Brown said.
But there is good news. From 2007 to now, we're seeing significant decreases in the amount of dogs and cats that are being euthanized. The number of animals being put down has been cut by thousands between 2007 and 2014. One of the reasons less dogs are being put down is adoption. "Saturday we were so busy we adopted out nine dogs," said volunteer Les Markovitz. Animals are also going to foster care and pet placement programs which help them find happy homes.
