LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Investigators have arrested a Lehigh Acres man they say is responsible for an October accidental shooting that left a toddler injured.
22-year-old Trevon Armstrong has been charged with Culpable Negligence and Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon after turning himself in Monday night.
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, on October 19th, Armstrong's gun was left in an easily accessible location in the home he shared with his sister and her 2-year-old daughter. The girl's mother left the room for a moment and heard a loud 'pop' coming from the room. She returned to the room to find the girl with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and a handgun falling from the bed.
The toddler was rushed to the hospital and luckily survived her injuries.
An investigation by the Lee County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit determined that the gun belonged to Armstrong, that he left the firearm in an unsafe and easily accessible location, and by doing so showed complete disregard for the safety of the victim.
Armstrong was forbidden from possessing a firearm due to a previous felony conviction. He has numerous arrests on his record for drug and weapons possession charges.
