CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- The death of an inmate at the Charlotte County Jail this summer has been ruled as natural causes.
47-year-old Gregg Ireland died August 24th while in custody in the jail.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, Ireland was arrested on August 22nd in Charlotte County for Driving Under the Influence. While in custody in the Charlotte County Jail, he became involved in a disturbance with another inmate. Detention Deputies responded to the disturbance and Ireland became combative. Detention Deputies restrained Ireland and moved him to another cell for direct observation.
During the process of restraining and relocating Ireland, he became unresponsive. Life-saving efforts were conducted at the Jail and he was then transported to Bayfront Hospital in Punta Gorda where he later died.
Wednesday, the Medical Examiner's Office for the State of Florida (District 22) released the official report of autopsy concerning Ireland's death. The official manner of death was determined to be a result of natural causes.
This conclusion was based on provided reports, including witness statements and medical records, as well as autopsy reports and ancillary testing.
